“A Ukrainian organization of topless female activists said Tuesday that three members were abducted by Belarussian security officers, beaten, humiliated and left naked in a forest. The group, Femen, has become widely known in Ukraine and neighboring countries for its demonstrations in which women bare their breasts to draw attention to a variety of causes. A statement on Femen’s Web site said the three women were seized by agents of the Belarussian K.G.B.”—NY Times (via thepoliticalpartygirl)
“If I had my ideal world I would not allow weapons and atom bombs anymore. I would destroy all terrorists with the Hollywood star Jean-Claude Van Damme. I would make people stop taking drugs…”—An excerpt from a poem written by Kim Jong il’s second son Kim Jong Chol in the sixth or seventh grade. Uh, can we please talk about the drug cartel in this? If anyone is making people piss their pants scared to use social media, it’s the cartel. It’s one thing for a terrorist organization to have an account to promote their ideals, it’s another thing to kill people for holding accounts or even sending one-time messages against their ideals.
However, this particular article on the Shabab network in Somalia is still fascinating. Though they’re obviously trying to promote themselves in a more polished manner, this could also mean people in the Western world can start conversations directly with insiders to the Shabab via Twitter. Instead of promotion, it could more likely backfire on the terrorist group.
